Youth Speaks is sponsored by Rotary International as a Youth Activities Services Project providing young people with the opportunity to develop the interpersonal skills necessary to make public presentations in a competitive environment.
This English language competition takes the format of a short debate presented by the team, on a topic of their choice, consisting of a Chairperson, Proposer and an Opposer. The prepared debate takes place in front of an invited audience. There are two levels of competition for Juniors (aged 11-13 years) and Seniors (aged 14-17 years).
For a number of years Cardiff Speakers Club have provided Rotary with adjudicators (panel of three) for a series of events throughout S.E. Wales from Zone to District final.
The Club Secretary Alan Jennings has taken a lead role in co-ordinating the availability of members to fulfil this function. There have been occasions of up to ten teams to be judged at an event, quite a responsibility particularly for the member designated as Chairman of the panel; delivering helpful advice to the contestants and the results to an eager audience.
This year 11 members have represented Cardiff Speakers Club with distinction, being able to be of benefit the Youth due to the skills they have developed within the Club.
